Men's Hockey Takes Down Johnson & Wales on Rumsey Hat-Trick

Franklin Pierce Men’s Hockey battled the Johnson & Wales Wildcats Friday night to a 5-3 victory, in a game that saw no shortage of goals or penalties.

The Ravens went 2-6 on powerplays, while the Wildcats countered by going 3-6. Both teams got 5-on-3 looks as well, with the Wildcats also getting a 4-on-3 chance.

The Ravens had Adam Carmen in goal tonight, with the senior saving 22 of the 25 shots he faced. Johnson & Wales countered with Jacob Perrin who faced a whopping 46 shots, saving 41.

Saturday’s non-conference win advances the Ravens to 3-8 on the season, while the Wildcats fall to 2-9.

The Ravens got off to a fast start in the first period. Chris Stevenson’s centering pass found Cody Rumsey across the slot, who dropped to one knee and fired lower left to give the Ravens an early advantage. That came on the power play, the only goal to come from Oliver Rooth’s major boarding penalty.

Action picked up again late in the period as the Wildcats found a powerplay breakthrough of their own.

Kevin Bite’s initial shot glanced Carmen’s pad and fell to the ice. Carmen couldn’t find it beneath him, beginning a scrum in front, and ending with Jake Glod getting the final touch at 18:14, tying the game at 1.

The period didn’t end there, however, as Rumsey found the back of the net again. Trevor Lawler’s shot produced a juicy rebound and an easy finish for Rumsey who beats the buzzer at 19:45. The period ended 2-1, Ravens leading.

Rumsey needed most of the 2nd, but at 15:15 he would finally complete his hat-trick, in the closing seconds of a 5-on-3 power play. Tyler Rudek pinches in with space before finding Rumsey wide open at the back door. Rumsey scored goals one, two, and three on the season tonight, a night to remember for the sophomore forward.

Once again, the Ravens weren’t done for the period as Dom Norris made it 4-1 in the final 20 seconds, finishing a pass from Paul Antkowiak from point-blank range.

The Wildcats seemed poised to claw their way back in the 3rd, as Brendan Shandley tipped in a Kevin Bite cross-crease with 2:14 elapsed. The power play goal cut the Ravens lead to 4-2.

Chris Stevenson and the Ravens answered back less than a minute later, after Jason Ladzinski found him down low. The Ravens went back ahead 5-2.

The game’s final goal came from Shandley again on a Wildcat power play. The goal was nearly identical to his first, a tip-in off a Kevin Bite cross-crease look. 5-3 proved to be the game’s final score.

Up next for the Ravens is a home conference tilt against Saint Anslem before the Holiday Break. Puck drop is set for 7:30 on Tuesday night in Winchendon.
